ADHD Assessments in Derbyshire

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects focus, attention, and self-regulation. It is marked by persistent patterns of:

  • Inattention
  • Impulsivity
  • Hyperactivity

These differences go beyond what’s typically expected for a child’s age and must be present in more than one setting(e.g., home and school) to meet diagnostic criteria.

Common Signs of ADHD in Tweens & Teens

Tweens and teenagers with ADHD may:

  • Struggle with concentration, memory, or starting tasks
  • Appear active, restless, or constantly “on the go”
  • Daydream, forget instructions, or appear disorganised
  • Show impulsivity, acting without thinking through consequences
  • Experience emotional highs and lows
  • Mask well at school but then “collapse” emotionally at home

No two young people present in the same way. Some are predominantly inattentive, others are more hyperactive/impulsive, and many experience a combined presentation.

Why Seek a Private ADHD Assessment?

Many parents come to us after months or years of uncertainty. You may have noticed your child struggling in class, falling behind academically, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations. A private ADHD assessment can provide:

  • Clarity and understanding of your child’s needs
  • A NICE-compliant diagnostic process using validated tools (including QbCheck and structured clinical interviews)
  • A detailed, child-centred report with practical recommendations for home and school
  • A neuroaffirming approach that recognises your child’s strengths as well as their challenges

While we do not prescribe ADHD medication, our assessments can be shared with your GP or paediatrician to support medical discussions and access to additional services.

Next Steps

If you’re worried your child may have ADHD, the first step is an initial screening appointment. This helps us understand your concerns and decide whether an ADHD assessment, autism assessment, or combined pathway would be most appropriate.

FAQ

How long does a private ADHD assessment take?

Our full process typically takes 4–6 weeks from your first screening appointment to receiving your report.

Is an ADHD diagnosis from Percuro accepted by schools?
Yes. Our reports are detailed, evidence-based, and recognised by schools and local authorities.

Do you assess teenagers as well as younger children?
Absolutely — we specialise in assessing tweens and teens (aged 10+), including those who may mask difficulties in structured settings but show struggles at home.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?
No, we do not prescribe medication. However, following an ADHD assessment, we are able to refer families to a private child psychiatrist (they have their own fees) to explore medication if appropriate and agreed. The psychiatrist will assess suitability, discuss benefits and risks, and prescribe if indicated. If medication is helpful and your GP is in agreement, care can often be transferred back to the GP under a Shared Care Agreement once treatment is established. We are able to refer directly to Rainbow Clinical Partnership *, or you may wish to explore and contact alternatives.
